White Olive Tree (Olea europaea ‘Leucocarpa’)
The White Olive Tree, Olea europaea ‘Leucocarpa’, is a rare and distinctive Mediterranean olive variety known for producing unusual ivory-white fruits rather than the typical green-to-black olives. With its elegant silvery-green evergreen foliage and excellent tolerance of Mediterranean conditions, it is beautifully suited to Maltese gardens, terraces, courtyards, and large containers.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while young and establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry between waterings. Once established, the White Olive Tree is highly drought-tolerant, although occasional deep watering during Malta’s prolonged summer drought will support healthier growth. Container-grown trees require more frequent watering, but always avoid waterlogged soil.

Plant in full sun, ideally where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Malta’s strong sunshine and warm summers suit olive trees exceptionally well. Plenty of sunlight also encourages compact, healthy growth and supports flowering and fruit development.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow to moderately growing evergreen tree develops the characteristic narrow, leathery, silvery-green leaves of an olive. Small creamy-white flowers can appear in spring, followed by distinctive pale fruits that become ivory or creamy-white as they mature. Light pruning can be carried out to maintain the desired shape, improve airflow, and remove crossing or damaged branches.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in well-draining soil, as olive trees dislike prolonged wet conditions around their roots. For containers, use a quality potting mix amended with coarse grit, pumice, or perlite to improve drainage. Large specimens require a substantial, stable container with generous drainage holes.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring as active growth begins. Trees grown in containers can receive an additional light feeding during the growing season. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruit production.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Olive trees are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, pets should still be discouraged from consuming large amounts of leaves or fruit, as excessive plant material may cause digestive upset.
