Description

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘Variegata’ is a striking evergreen shrub combining the large, tropical flowers of Chinese Hibiscus with beautifully variegated green and creamy-white foliage, often flushed with pink. Well suited to Malta’s warm climate, it makes an eye-catching feature plant for containers, patios, balconies, and sheltered garden borders.

💧 Watering
Water regularly during spring and summer, keeping the soil moderately moist but never waterlogged. During Malta’s hottest months, container-grown plants may require frequent watering, particularly in exposed positions. Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again, and reduce watering during winter.

☀️ Light
Grow in a bright position with plenty of sunlight for healthy growth and flowering. Morning sun followed by some protection from Malta’s strongest afternoon summer sun is particularly suitable, as the pale sections of variegated leaves can scorch more easily than those of an all-green Hibiscus. Too much shade, however, can reduce flowering and weaken the variegation.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This bushy evergreen shrub produces colourful leaves patterned with green, cream and white, often developing attractive pink or reddish tones on new growth. Large, showy Hibiscus flowers provide an additional splash of colour during the warmer months. Light pruning encourages branching and helps maintain a dense, well-shaped plant.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, organic-rich potting mix with good drainage. Adding perlite or another coarse material can improve aeration and prevent the roots from remaining excessively wet. Container-grown plants should always have adequate drainage holes.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed regularly from spring through early autumn with a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. A balanced feed with adequate potassium supports both healthy foliage and abundant flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, eating a large quantity of any plant material can cause mild digestive upset, so excessive chewing should still be discouraged.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Variegated Hibiscus is primarily valued for its colourful foliage and spectacular flowers rather than for proven air-purifying properties. When grown outdoors, its flowers can also attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects.
