Description

Sundaville (Mandevilla)

Sundaville is a spectacular flowering climber from the Mandevilla group, loved for its glossy green foliage and vibrant trumpet-shaped flowers. Its love of warmth and sunshine makes it particularly well suited to Malta, where it provides months of colour on balconies, terraces, pergolas, and trellises.

💧 Watering
Water regularly during spring and summer, allowing the top few centimetres of soil to dry slightly between waterings. During Malta’s hottest months, container-grown plants may need frequent watering, but avoid keeping the soil constantly wet. Reduce watering considerably during winter.

☀️ Light
Sundaville thrives in full sun to partial shade and flowers best with plenty of bright sunlight. In Malta, morning sun with some protection from the most intense afternoon heat can be beneficial for plants grown in containers, although established plants tolerate sunny conditions very well.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen plant produces glossy green leaves and an abundance of trumpet-shaped flowers from spring well into autumn. Its long stems can be trained around a trellis or other support. Light pruning helps maintain a compact, bushy shape and encourages fresh flowering growth.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. Adding perlite or other coarse material can improve drainage, particularly for container-grown plants. Always choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. A fertilizer with good potassium levels will help encourage abundant, long-lasting blooms. Reduce or stop feeding during winter when growth slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Sundaville and other Mandevilla plants are best kept away from cats and dogs. Their milky sap can cause irritation, and ingestion may result in digestive upset. Wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Sundaville is primarily valued for its colourful flowers and ornamental climbing growth rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its long flowering season also makes it attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
