Sansevieria Nana (Dwarf Snake Plant)

Sansevieria Nana is a compact variety of Snake Plant valued for its sturdy, upright foliage and exceptionally easy-care nature. Its small size makes it ideal for desks, shelves, windowsills, and smaller indoor spaces, while its excellent tolerance of heat and occasional neglect makes it particularly suitable for homes in Malta.

💧 Watering
Water sparingly, allowing the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings. Sansevieria stores water in its thick leaves and is highly drought-tolerant. During Malta’s warmer months it may need slightly more frequent watering, while in winter watering should be greatly reduced. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light but is highly adaptable and can tolerate lower-light conditions. Some gentle morning or late afternoon sun is beneficial, but protect the plant from Malta’s strongest summer afternoon sun, particularly when grown behind glass.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow-growing, compact plant produces short, thick leaves arranged in an attractive rosette or upright cluster, depending on the variety. Its foliage may feature different shades of green, attractive banding, or yellow-green variegation. New shoots emerge from underground rhizomes and can gradually form a fuller clump.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix, ideally with added perlite, pumice, or coarse grit. Always use a container with drainage holes, as prolonged moisture around the roots can quickly cause rot.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for cacti and succulents. Sansevieria has low nutrient requirements, so avoid excessive feeding. Fertilizer is generally unnecessary during winter.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Sansevieria is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains saponins that may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or other digestive irritation, so keep the plant away from pets that are likely to chew foliage.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Sansevieria is frequently described as an air-purifying houseplant and is unusual in using CAM photosynthesis, taking in carbon dioxide mainly at night. While laboratory studies have shown that Snake Plants can absorb certain airborne compounds, normal household quantities should not be relied upon as a substitute for ventilation or air filtration.
