💧 Watering
Keep a small amount of fresh water in the centre of the leaf rosette (the “cup”) and refresh it every week to prevent stagnation. Water the potting mix lightly when the top 2–3cm feels dry, ensuring it never becomes waterlogged. During Malta’s hot summers, check moisture levels more frequently.
☀️ Light
Guzmania grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly during Malta’s intense summer afternoons, as it can scorch the leaves and fade the colourful flower bracts.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow-growing plant forms a graceful rosette of glossy leaves topped by colourful red, orange, yellow, or pink bracts that can last for several months. After flowering, the mother plant gradually declines while producing offsets (pups), which can be separated and grown into new plants.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a light, free-draining bromeliad or orchid potting mix containing bark, perlite, and coarse organic material. Good airflow around the roots is essential for healthy growth.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or one formulated for bromeliads. Apply sparingly, as Guzmanias require very little feeding.
