Description
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, allowing only the top 1–2cm of the potting mix to dry before watering again. During Malta’s hot summers, the plant may require more frequent watering. Avoid letting the soil become waterlogged or completely dry.
☀️ Light
Calathea grows best in bright, indirect light and will also tolerate medium light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during Malta’s intense summer afternoons, as it can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive patterns.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This compact, slow-growing plant is prized for its decorative foliage rather than its flowers. Its leaves naturally fold upwards during the evening and reopen during the day, a fascinating characteristic known as “prayer plant” movement. Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves to encourage fresh growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a light, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix containing peat-free compost, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark provides excellent moisture retention while allowing good airflow around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows naturally.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Calathea ‘Bella Carline’ is non-toxic to both cats and dogs, making it an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Calatheas are considered good indoor air-purifying plants. Their lush foliage helps improve indoor air quality while adding humidity and creating a healthier, more relaxing indoor environment.
