Description

Trailing Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus Prostratus Group), known in Italian as Rosmarino Ricadente, is a hardy, aromatic Mediterranean herb prized for its fragrant, needle-like green leaves and beautiful cascading growth. Unlike upright rosemary, this variety develops long, trailing branches that spill gracefully over walls, containers and garden borders. Its delicate blue to violet flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Widely used in Mediterranean cooking, rosemary is perfect for seasoning roasted meats, potatoes, vegetables, soups, marinades and homemade bread. Its attractive trailing habit makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, raised beds, rock gardens and terraces. Naturally adapted to Malta’s hot, dry climate, it combines culinary value with ornamental appeal.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Requires full sun, ideally 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Thrives in Malta’s sunny gardens, balconies and terraces.

💧 Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during Malta’s hot summers.

🌱 Soil: Plant in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates poor, limestone-rich soils but dislikes waterlogged conditions.

🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in Mediterranean conditions, ideally between 15°C–30°C. Tolerates Malta’s mild winters and hot summers well.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 60–100 cm between plants to accommodate their spreading, trailing growth.

🌾 Fertilizer: Requires minimal feeding. Apply a light organic fertilizer once or twice during the growing season if necessary.

✂️ Harvesting: Snip fresh sprigs as needed for cooking. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage dense, compact growth. Avoid cutting deeply into old, woody stems.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: March to May or September to November, although established plants can grow throughout the year.

Position: Sunny terraces, raised beds, rock gardens, hanging baskets or containers where branches can cascade naturally.

Companion plants: Thyme, oregano, sage and lavender.

Common issue: Root rot caused by excessive watering or poor drainage. Ensure pots have drainage holes and avoid leaving plants standing in water.
