Description

Alocasia is a striking tropical houseplant known for its dramatic, architectural leaves, which vary in shape, colour, and pattern between varieties. It thrives in Malta’s warmth when provided with bright indirect light and good humidity, making it an impressive statement plant for indoor spaces.

💧 Watering
Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth, allowing the top 2–3cm to dry before watering again. During Malta’s hot summers, check the soil regularly, but never allow the roots to remain waterlogged. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows or the plant enters partial dormancy.

☀️ Light
Alocasia grows best in bright, indirect light. Some gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but protect the foliage from Malta’s intense midday and afternoon summer sun, which can cause scorching. Varieties with darker or more heavily patterned foliage may have slightly different light requirements.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Alocasias produce large, distinctive leaves on upright stems, creating a bold tropical appearance. Leaf size, colour, and pattern vary considerably between varieties. Older leaves naturally yellow and die as new ones develop, and growth may slow considerably during the cooler months.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich but airy and well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming soggy. A combination of quality indoor plant compost, orchid bark, and perlite or pumice provides a good balance of moisture retention, drainage, and airflow around the roots.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Alocasias can be relatively heavy feeders while actively growing, but reduce or stop fertilizing during autumn and winter if growth slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. The plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause intense irritation of the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Alocasia contributes to a pleasant indoor environment through its large foliage and natural transpiration. While plants can absorb some airborne compounds under controlled conditions, Alocasia is best valued for its dramatic ornamental foliage rather than relied upon as a substitute for proper ventilation or air filtration.
