Description
💧 Watering
Extremely drought-tolerant once established. In fact, its biggest enemy in Malta is humidity combined with wet soil. Only water when the soil is completely dry. During the rainy Maltese winter, ensure it is in a spot with excellent drainage; if the roots stay wet for too long, the plant will decline rapidly.
☀️ Light
Requires full sun. It needs the most intense light you can provide to maintain its brilliant white color. Without enough sun, the plant will lose its “silky” silver look and become sparse and grey. It loves the heat of a Maltese summer afternoon.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features soft, needle-like leaves covered in dense, white woolly hairs that protect it from water loss. It grows as a woody shrub, reaching about 1–1.5 meters tall. In spring and early summer, it produces tubular, lilac-to-purple flowers that contrast beautifully against the silver backdrop.
🪴 Potting Mix
Must have superb drainage. Use a cactus/succulent mix or a Mediterranean blend with added perlite, coarse sand, or even local “żrar” (fine gravel). It prefers slightly alkaline or neutral soil, making it very compatible with Malta’s natural limestone-based environment.
🌿 Fertilizer
A very light feeder. Use a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertilizer (native-plant safe) once in the spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which will cause weak, floppy growth and reduce the intensity of the silver foliage.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic to pets. Its fuzzy texture is usually not very appealing to cats or dogs anyway, so they tend to leave it alone. However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily an outdoor or terrace plant. While it doesn’t “filter” indoor air like a spider plant, its dense foliage is excellent at catching dust in breezy coastal areas like St. Paul’s Bay or Marsascala.
