Description
💧 Watering
Incredibly drought-tolerant; only water when the soil is bone dry, which may be every 2–3 weeks. During the humid Maltese winter, reduce watering even further to prevent root rot.
☀️ Light
Extremely adaptable, it can handle everything from low-light corners to bright, indirect Maltese sun. However, avoid placing it in direct, mid-summer sun for long periods to prevent leaf bleaching.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features short, dark green leaves with silvery-green marbling that grow in a funnel-shaped rosette. It is a slow grower that stays low to the ground, rarely exceeding 15–20 cm in height.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very gritty, free-draining cactus or succulent mix. Given Malta’s humidity, adding extra pumice or perlite is highly recommended to ensure moisture doesn’t trap around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed very sparingly with a diluted succulent fertilizer once in the spring and once in the summer. Over-fertilizing can cause the plant to become weak and floppy.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Contains saponins which are mildly toxic if ingested by cats or dogs. It is best placed on higher surfaces where curious pets cannot nibble on the leaves.
🌬️ Air Purifying
A champion of indoor air quality, it is famous for converting CO₂ into oxygen at night. It also helps filter out common household toxins like benzene and formaldehyde.
