Description
💧 Watering
Extremely drought-tolerant once established; it requires very little water and thrives in dry conditions. In pots, allow the soil to dry out almost completely before watering, as excess moisture—especially in winter—can lead to root rot.
☀️ Light
This grass loves full sun and needs plenty of direct light to maintain its upright, feathery form. It handles the intense heat of the Maltese summer with ease and won’t bleach or wilt under the sun.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features incredibly fine, needle-like foliage that forms a neat clump, topped by soft, feathery flower heads in summer. It is a deciduous-leaning perennial that can be “combed” through with fingers in late winter to remove old brown blades.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very well-draining, gritty potting mix; a blend of potting soil with plenty of sand or perlite is perfect. It is well-suited to the alkaline nature of Maltese soil and prefers “lean” conditions over rich, heavy compost.
🌿 Fertilizer
Generally requires no fertilizer, as it is adapted to poor soils and high nitrogen can actually cause the plant to become floppy. A single, very light feed in early spring is the maximum it would ever need.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
It is generally non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, the fine seeds and blades can occasionally get stuck in fur or paws, and curious pets might find the swaying “tails” irresistible to chew on.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While not a primary indoor purifier, its dense, fine foliage is excellent at capturing fine dust and particulates in outdoor spaces. It contributes to a healthy garden ecosystem by providing movement and oxygen.
