Description
The Ceropegia woodii, famously known as the String of Hearts, is a delicate, trailing succulent. It is a favorite for Maltese balconies or high shelves because its heart-shaped leaves hang down like a beautiful beaded curtain.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light. It loves the morning sun but will “scorch” in the direct Maltese afternoon heat. If the light is too low, the spaces between the “hearts” will get long and leggy, and the leaves will lose their purple marbling.
💧 Watering
Low. This is a succulent. Water only when the soil is completely dry. It stores water in its fleshy leaves and small potato-like “tubers” (bulbs) in the soil.
The Malta Tip: In winter, you might only need to water it once a month. Overwatering is the fastest way to kill it.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
The leaves are dark green with silver veining and purple undersides. It can grow very long, sometimes reaching 2–3 meters! It also produces strange, small, tubular flowers that look like tiny purple lanterns.
🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is vital. Use a cactus and succulent mix or a standard soil mixed with plenty of perlite or sand.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed very lightly with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength once a month during spring and summer.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! String of Hearts is non-toxic to cats and dogs, so it’s a perfect plant for a hanging basket where pets might try to “bat” at the trailing vines.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
