Description
Pyrus communis is a deciduous fruit tree admired for its beautiful spring blossoms and delicious, juicy pears. A lovely addition to fruit gardens, it provides seasonal interest and homegrown fruit.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Deep watering is important during Malta’s hot summers, especially during flowering and fruit development.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6 hours daily. Choose a sheltered location with good airflow.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces glossy green leaves, delicate white spring flowers and edible pears. Loses its leaves in winter. Fruit production depends on the variety, winter chilling and pollination.
🪴 Potting Mix
Prefers fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Avoid waterlogging and excessive soil dryness.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce fruit production.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ripe pear flesh is non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, seeds contain compounds that can release cyanide when chewed. Keep seeds, cores and fallen fruit away from pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily valued for its edible fruit, spring blossoms and contribution to garden biodiversity rather than specific air-purifying properties.
