Description
The Cyperus papyrus, or Giant Egyptian Papyrus, is a legendary aquatic perennial that brings an ancient, lakeside elegance to the Maltese landscape. Its tall, triangular stems topped with “puffball” umbels make it a striking choice for water features or large, decorative pots on a terrace.
💧 Watering
This is a true water-lover that should never dry out; in Malta’s heat, it is best grown in a pot with no drainage holes or a saucer that is kept constantly full. It thrives when the “feet” are submerged in a few centimeters of water at all times.
☀️ Light
It performs best in full sun, which keeps the tall stems strong and the green tufts vibrant. While it can tolerate partial shade, it may become “floppy” and lose its signature architectural uprightness if the light is too low.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features tall, leafless green stems topped with a radiating spray of fine, thread-like bracts that look like green fireworks. It is a fast grower and can reach impressive heights quickly if provided with enough water and warmth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a heavy, loamy potting soil that retains moisture well—standard “well-draining” mixes are actually counter-productive here. Adding a layer of gravel on top can help keep the soil in place if the pot is submerged in a pond.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks during the spring and summer to fuel its rapid growth. If grown in a pond with fish, be cautious with fertilizers and use aquatic-safe spikes instead.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Cyperus papyrus is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, cats are often tempted to chew on the thread-like “pom-poms,” which can cause minor stomach upset if consumed in large quantities.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While primarily an outdoor plant, it is an incredible natural humidifier, releasing significant moisture into the dry Maltese air through transpiration. It is also used in biological water filtration to help keep pond water clean and clear.
