Description

Light Green Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), known in Italian as Zucchino Verde Chiaro Tollerante Virus, is a productive vegetable variety recognised for its attractive, smooth, light green fruits and vigorous growth. This variety offers improved tolerance to common zucchini viruses, helping plants maintain healthy growth and productivity under challenging conditions.

With its tender texture and mild, delicate flavour, Light Green Zucchini is perfect for grilling, roasting, stir-fries, soups, pasta dishes and traditional Mediterranean recipes. Its generous fruit production makes it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Requires full sun, with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Watering: Water deeply and regularly, keeping soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce fungal diseases.

🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure.

🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 18°C–28°C. Protect young seedlings from cold temperatures and extreme summer heat.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 80–100 cm between plants to accommodate their spreading foliage and ensure good air circulation.

🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer during early growth, switching to a potassium-rich fertilizer once flowering and fruiting begin. Follow product instructions.

✂️ Harvesting: Harvest zucchini when young and tender, typically 15–20 cm long. The first fruits may be ready approximately 25–40 days after transplanting under favourable conditions. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: March to May, with a second planting possible from late August to September when temperatures are suitable.

Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or large containers with fertile soil, good drainage and plenty of growing space.

Companion plants: Basil, beans, nasturtiums and marigolds.

Common issue: Powdery mildew, aphids and viral infections can affect zucchini plants. Maintain good air circulation, inspect regularly and control insect pests. Virus tolerance helps reduce the impact of infections but does not provide complete immunity.
