Description
💧 Watering
It prefers to stay consistently moist but not soggy. Check the soil daily; water as soon as the top centimeter feels dry. Because it has relatively fine roots, it can be sensitive to drying out completely, especially in a small pot during a hot Maltese summer.
☀️ Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light. While it enjoys morning sun, the intense Maltese afternoon sun can be too harsh and may scorch its delicate foliage. Indoors, a south or east-facing window is ideal; outdoors, it should be kept in a sheltered, partially shaded spot.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
The plant features small, pinnate leaves that have a brilliant shine, giving it a very lush, healthy appearance. It is a slow-to-moderate grower and naturally develops a rugged, woody trunk, making it an excellent candidate for “mame” or small-scale bonsai training.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very well-draining, airy mix. If keeping it as a bonsai, use a traditional mix of akadama, pumice, and lava rock. For a regular decorative pot, a high-quality potting soil amended with plenty of perlite or fine grit will ensure the roots stay aerated.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season (spring through autumn). In winter, reduce feeding to once a month. Since this is a “pepper” relative, it appreciates a consistent supply of nutrients to maintain its glossy leaf finish.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
While not listed as highly toxic, most members of the Zanthoxylum genus contain essential oils and alkaloids that can cause stomach upset if ingested by pets. Furthermore, some varieties have small, sharp thorns along the stems, so it is best kept out of reach of curious paws.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Its most unique “purifying” quality is its fragrance! The natural oils in the leaves act as a mild, natural air freshener. Like most woody plants, it is effective at absorbing CO2 and releasing fresh oxygen, making it a great desk companion.
