Description

Vinca, also known as Madagascar Periwinkle, is a tough, sun-loving flowering plant that produces an abundance of colourful blooms from spring until late autumn. It is exceptionally well suited to Malta’s hot, dry summers, making it an excellent choice for garden beds, borders, and containers.

💧 Watering

Water regularly after planting to help establish the roots. Once established, Vinca is highly drought-tolerant and only needs watering when the soil has dried out. Avoid overwatering, as it prefers slightly dry conditions.

☀️ Light

Vinca thrives in full sun and flowers most abundantly with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It also tolerates partial shade but may produce fewer flowers.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This compact, bushy plant has glossy green leaves and blooms continuously in shades of white, pink, red, purple, and lavender throughout the warm season. Remove faded flowers and trim lightly if needed to encourage fresh growth and keep the plant tidy.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in a well-draining potting mix or fertile garden soil. Good drainage is essential, as Vinca does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer to support healthy growth and continuous flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage foliage at the expense of blooms.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Vinca is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, as it contains naturally occurring alkaloids. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and young children.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Vinca is grown primarily for its colourful, long-lasting flowers rather than its air-purifying qualities. It also attracts bees and butterflies, helping to support a healthy and vibrant garden ecosystem.
