Description
The Catharanthus roseus ‘Soiree’ (technically a specialized hybrid series of Madagascar Periwinkle, often grouped under Vinca) is a cutting-edge breakthrough in summer bedding plants. It is highly celebrated for its miniature, star-shaped flowers that bloom in an incredibly dense, non-stop sheet of color, effortlessly handling intense heat and humidity that would make other plants wilt.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly only when the top 3 centimeters of soil are completely dry. The ‘Soiree’ series is highly drought-tolerant once established and prefers staying slightly on the dry side. Crucial rule: Never overwater or let them sit in a soggy saucer. They are highly susceptible to root rot if kept constantly wet, especially during cooler spells.
☀️ Light
It demands absolute full, baking, direct sunlight. This plant loves heat and requires a minimum of six hours of intense sun daily to maintain its incredibly tight, compact flowering form. It thrives effortlessly in the most intense, sun-drenched microclimates of Mediterranean terraces and balconies.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Unlike standard wild Vinca, the ‘Soiree’ series grows into an exceptionally neat, tight, rounded mound that rarely exceeds 20 to 30 centimeters in height. The foliage consists of glossy, deep green, leathery small leaves that create a beautiful dark backdrop for the vivid flowers. It is completely self-cleaning, meaning dead flowers drop away neatly on their own without any need for pinching or deadheading.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a lightweight, premium potting mix with excellent, sharp drainage. Mix in a generous handful of perlite or sand to ensure water passes through instantly. It handles a wide range of soil pH levels and adapts perfectly to container life in window boxes, low patio pots, or mixed summer baskets.
🌿 Fertilizer
Because it pumps out hundreds of miniature flowers continuously from spring until winter, it is a moderately heavy feeder. Apply a water-soluble liquid fertilizer balanced for flowering plants every two weeks during the spring and summer to keep the blossom production at its peak.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Highly toxic to pets. All parts of the Catharanthus plant contain toxic vinca alkaloids (including vinblastine and vincristine). If ingested by dogs or cats, it can cause severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, lethargy, coordination loss, and even seizures. Keep pots elevated safely out of reach.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While not used for indoor air purification, its dense canopy and heavy flowering habit make it a fantastic outdoor pollinator sanctuary. It provides a highly reliable, consistent nectar source for local bees, butterflies, and helpful garden insects throughout the hottest months of the year.
