Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly during the first year to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Viburnum is fairly drought-tolerant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering during Malta’s long, dry summers. Water container-grown plants more frequently.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In Malta, it performs best with plenty of morning sun and can tolerate light afternoon shade in particularly hot locations.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This dense, evergreen shrub features glossy, dark green leaves and naturally forms a rounded shape. It flowers from late autumn through spring, followed by metallic blue-black berries. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or a quality potting mix enriched with organic matter. Ensure containers have good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy foliage and flowering. An additional light feeding in early summer can support vigorous growth if needed.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Viburnum tinus is considered mildly toxic if ingested. The berries and foliage may cause stomach upset in cats and dogs, so it is best to prevent pets from chewing the plant.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Although not known as a significant air-purifying plant indoors, Viburnum helps improve the outdoor environment by producing oxygen, supporting biodiversity, and providing nectar for pollinators during its flowering season.
