Description

‘Marathon’ Broccoli is the industry standard for quality broccoli. It is a vigorous, upright plant known for its exceptional uniformity and high production, even under variable growing conditions. The main head it produces is a magnificent, large, compact dome with a very fine grain and a rich, deep blue-green colour. This head quality makes it outstanding for both fresh consumption and processing.

Harvest & Re-Growth: One of ‘Marathon’s’ best traits is its ability to produce abundant, large side shoots once the central head is harvested. This provides a generous and extended harvest period, giving you broccoli florets long after the main crop is done.

Broccoli, being a member of the Brassica family, is a “heavy feeder” that thrives in the cooler temperatures of Malta’s late autumn and winter.

When to Plant: Transplanting your seedling in late August, September, or October is ideal. This ensures the plant establishes during the cooling autumn and matures in the prime growing conditions of the late autumn/winter.

Avoid planting too late in spring can expose the maturing heads to sudden heat, causing them to “button” (form prematurely small heads) or bolt.

Location/Sun: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours per day).

Soil: Requires fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Broccoli is a heavy feeder, so enrich the planting site generously with aged compost or well-rotted manure before transplanting.

Spacing: Give the plant plenty of room—aim for at least 60–80 cm between plants to allow the large leaves to gather maximum sunlight and support the heavy heads.

Watering: Consistent, deep watering is essential. Broccoli needs continuous moisture throughout its life, especially as the heads begin to form. Water stress will cause the heads to be small and loose.

Feeding: As a heavy feeder, apply a balanced, high-nitrogen fertiliser approximately 3–4 weeks after transplanting and again when the central head starts to emerge.

Harvesting:
Main Head: Harvest the central head when it is dark green, firm, and before the flower buds begin to loosen or turn yellow (usually 80–90 days from transplant). Cut the head with about 10–15 cm of stem attached.
Side Shoots: After cutting the main head, the plant will push energy into developing the side shoots. Continue to harvest these smaller florets regularly to encourage more growth and extend your yield for several weeks.

Why Buy This Seedling? ‘Marathon’ Broccoli is the definition of reliable, high-quality broccoli. If you want a guaranteed large, tightly formed head and an extended harvest season from your side shoots, this is the superior choice for your Maltese winter vegetable garden.
