Purple Sicilian Cauliflower – 12 Seedlings

Purple Sicilian Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis), also known as Violetto di Sicilia, is a traditional Italian vegetable prized for its beautiful violet-purple heads and excellent flavour. This distinctive variety produces rounded, compact heads surrounded by green leaves, adding a vibrant splash of colour to vegetable gardens.

With its mild, slightly sweet flavour, Purple Sicilian Cauliflower is perfect for roasting, steaming, soups, pasta dishes and fresh salads. Its natural purple colour comes from anthocyanin pigments, although the florets may turn green when boiled.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential for developing firm, healthy heads.

🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.

🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–20°C. Protect from excessive heat and sudden temperature changes.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–60 cm between plants for proper head development and good air circulation.

🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.

✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the purple head is firm, compact and fully developed, before the florets begin to separate. Typically ready 100–110 days after transplanting, depending on growing conditions.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: September to February, particularly for autumn and winter growing.

Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil and good drainage.

Companion plants: Lettuce, celery, onions and aromatic herbs.

Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids can damage the leaves. Inspect regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary.
