🪴 Planting Instructions

• When to plant: Late autumn, once the soil has cooled; allow time for chilling if needed
• Planting depth: Plant at approximately three times the bulb’s height, measured from the soil surface to its base.
• Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart
• Soil: Fertile, free-draining soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
• Planting method: Place bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water if dry. Plant in groups for a fuller display.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Check pots regularly during dry spring weather. Reduce watering as the leaves yellow and keep dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from strong winds. In Malta, morning sunshine with some afternoon shade can help protect the late-spring blooms from strong heat. Avoid deep shade and areas where rainwater collects.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue while the leaves remain green after flowering, then stop as they begin to yellow.

🍃 After Flowering

Remove faded flower heads and allow the stems and leaves to yellow naturally before cutting them back.

Bulbs can be kept for another season, but repeat flowering in Malta is not guaranteed. Fresh bulbs generally give the most reliable display.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Tulips need a cold period for good flower development. If the bulbs have not already been chilled, refrigerating them in a paper bag for around 6–8 weeks before planting can help in mild climates. Follow supplier instructions, as some bulbs may need longer chilling.

Keep bulbs away from fruit, which releases gas that can damage developing flowers. Never freeze them, and plant promptly after chilling once outdoor conditions are cooler.
