Create a natural spring display with this mix of species, or botanical, tulips. Their varied flower shapes and colours bring charm to rock gardens, border edges and pots. Plant in groups for a colourful display that complements other spring bulbs.

🪴 Planting Instructions

• When to plant: Autumn, once the soil has cooled
• Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep, following the supplier’s instructions
• Spacing: Approximately 8–10cm apart
• Soil: Free-draining soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
• Planting method: Place bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water if dry. Plant in groups for a fuller display.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Check pots regularly during dry weather. Reduce watering as the foliage yellows and keep dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

☀️ Light & Position

Choose a sunny, well-drained position. Light afternoon shade can be useful in Malta where spring heat is strong, particularly for pots. Avoid deep shade and areas where rainwater collects.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue while the leaves remain green after flowering, then stop as they begin to yellow.

🍃 After Flowering

Remove faded flower heads and allow the leaves to yellow and dry naturally before cutting them back.

Species tulips can return and gradually multiply in suitable conditions. Leave bulbs planted where drainage is excellent and summers are dry, although repeat flowering in Malta depends on the species and winter conditions.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Some species tulips are better suited to mild climates than large hybrid tulips, but chilling needs differ between species. Check the packet or supplier’s advice before refrigerating this mix.

If chilling is recommended, keep bulbs in a paper bag away from fruit, never freeze them, and plant promptly afterwards once outdoor conditions are cooler.
