Description

Trichocereus bridgesii f. monstrosa cristata is an unusual collector’s cactus prized for its dramatic, sculptural growth. Combining monstrose and crested mutations, this fascinating plant develops irregular, twisting stems and fan-shaped formations, making every specimen completely unique.

Its blue-green colouring, distinctive ridges and unpredictable growth patterns create an eye-catching addition to any cactus collection. Drought tolerant and relatively easy to maintain, it is particularly appealing to enthusiasts of rare and unusual succulents.

Botanical Name: Trichocereus bridgesii f. monstrosa cristata (also known as Echinopsis lageniformis)
Common Name: Crested Monstrose Bolivian Torch Cactus
Plant Type: Cactus
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Irregular, crested and monstrose
Mature Size: Highly variable; can develop into a substantial branching specimen over many years

Care Guide

☀️ Light:
Prefers full sun or very bright light. In Malta, gradually acclimatise to direct sunlight and protect from sudden exposure to intense summer afternoon sun.

💧 Watering:
Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter.

🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit or pumice to prevent waterlogging.

🌡 Temperature:
Thrives in warm conditions between 15–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C, particularly when the compost is damp.

Flowering: Mature plants may occasionally produce large, fragrant white flowers that open during the evening or night. However, flowering is uncommon on monstrose and crested specimens, which are primarily grown for their unusual shapes.

Why You’ll Love It

✔ Rare combination of crested and monstrose growth
✔ Unique twisting and sculptural formations
✔ Attractive blue-green colouring
✔ Every specimen develops differently
✔ Drought tolerant and relatively low maintenance
✔ An exceptional addition to a collector’s cactus collection

Care Level:⭐⭐ Easy

A relatively straightforward cactus when provided with plenty of light, excellent drainage and careful watering. Its unusual growth can make some areas more susceptible to trapped moisture, so good airflow is beneficial.

🐾 Pet Safety: Keep Out of Reach of Pets

Trichocereus bridgesii contains naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloids, including mescaline, and should not be ingested by people or pets. Its spines may also cause physical injury. Keep away from children and animals.

Good to Know

This remarkable cactus displays two unusual growth characteristics:
Monstrose growth: Irregular, distorted stems that develop unpredictable shapes.
Crested growth: A mutation known as fasciation, where the growing point forms flattened, fan-shaped structures instead of a typical upright stem.

The combination creates exceptionally unusual specimens, with no two plants developing exactly alike.

Despite its unusual appearance, it belongs to the same species as the Bolivian Torch Cactus, native to South America.

Please Note: As a living plant, each specimen is unique. Crest formation, stem shape, colour and spine development will vary naturally. These differences are part of the appeal of this distinctive collector’s cactus.
