Description
💧 Watering
Allow the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings, as it stores water in its fleshy stems. In the peak of a Maltese summer, you’ll find it thirstier, but always ensure the pot isn’t sitting in a pool of water.
☀️ Light
Needs bright, indirect light to maintain its intense purple and pink variegation. While it can handle some direct morning sun, the fierce Maltese afternoon sun should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features stiff, sword-shaped leaves that grow in an upright rosette pattern. It is a vigorous grower that will eventually clump together, creating a lush, architectural look in any pot.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in a well-draining, all-purpose potting soil mixed with a bit of perlite or coarse sand. This ensures that the roots stay aerated, which is vital during our more humid winter months.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month from March to September. Given the mineral-heavy tap water in Malta, an occasional flush with rainwater will help keep the foliage looking pristine.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The sap can be mildly irritating to the skin or mouth of cats and dogs if brushed against or chewed. It is best placed on a shelf or plant stand where it remains out of reach of curious pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Like most Tradescantias, it is effective at removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor environments. Its dense foliage also helps slightly regulate humidity in its immediate vicinity.
