Description
Tephrocactus geometricus is an extraordinary collector’s cactus, prized for its perfectly rounded, blue-grey segments and unusual geometric appearance. Its smooth, spherical stems develop in stacked formations, creating a striking sculptural silhouette that makes this species one of the most distinctive members of the cactus family.
Native to the high-altitude desert regions of Argentina, this slow-growing cactus is highly sought after by collectors for its beautiful colouring, compact growth and remarkable symmetry. Its unusual appearance makes it an excellent addition to sunny windowsills, decorative containers and specialist cactus collections.
Plant Details
Botanical Name: Tephrocactus geometricus
Common Name: Geometric Cactus • Geometric Opuntia
Plant Type: Cactus
Growth Rate: Very Slow
Growth Habit: Compact, segmented, gradually forming clusters of rounded stems
Mature Size: Approximately 15–25 cm tall × 15–25 cm wide over many years
Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Prefers full sun or very bright light. In Malta, gradually acclimatise young plants to direct sunlight and provide some protection from intense summer afternoon sun, particularly during prolonged heatwaves.
💧 Watering:
Water thoroughly during the active growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during autumn and keep almost completely dry during winter dormancy. Avoid overwatering, as this species is particularly sensitive to excess moisture.
🌱 Soil:
Use an extremely free-draining cactus and succulent compost with a high proportion of mineral materials such as pumice, coarse grit or perlite. Excellent drainage is essential for healthy root development.
🌡 Temperature:
Best grown between 15–30°C during active growth. Protect from prolonged cold and frost, particularly when the compost is damp. Keep dry during cooler winter conditions.
🌸 Flowering
Mature specimens may produce spectacular, silky flowers in shades of white to very pale pink, often with delicate darker centres. The flowers emerge from the upper portions of the rounded segments, creating a beautiful contrast against the cactus’s blue-grey colouring.
Flowering generally occurs during late spring or summer and is more likely in well-established plants receiving plenty of sunlight and a suitable winter rest period.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Use Caution Around Pets
Tephrocactus geometricus is not generally regarded as toxic to cats or dogs, although reliable species-specific toxicity information is limited. Some specimens develop sharp spines, and detached segments may cause injury if handled or chewed. Keep out of reach of curious pets and young children.
Good to Know
The name geometricus refers to the cactus’s remarkable geometric appearance, created by its nearly spherical stem segments.
Unlike traditional columnar cacti, Tephrocactus geometricus grows by producing new rounded segments from existing ones. Over time, these segments form unusual stacked or branching arrangements, with every specimen developing its own distinctive shape.
Its attractive blue-grey colouring is partly due to a natural waxy coating that helps protect the plant from intense sunlight and moisture loss. Avoid rubbing the surface, as this protective coating can be damaged.
The segments can occasionally detach naturally, particularly as the plant matures. Under suitable conditions, detached segments may develop roots and grow into new plants.
Because of its extremely slow growth and unusual appearance, Tephrocactus geometricus is especially valued among specialist cactus collectors.
