Description
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly when the top 3 to 5 centimeters of soil feel dry to the touch. They prefer consistent, moderate moisture but are highly susceptible to root rot if left sitting in waterlogged soil. Reduce watering frequency considerably during the cooler winter months.
☀️ Light
Thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight. While they can tolerate lower light levels, their growth will slow down, and heavily variegated or pink varieties will lose their striking colors and revert to solid green. Avoid placing them in direct, harsh afternoon sun, which will quickly scorch their soft leaves.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
When young, the plant grows in a compact, bushy mound of distinctly arrow-shaped leaves. As it matures, it naturally begins to produce trailing or climbing vines, and the leaves split into multi-lobed structures. You can keep it bushy by regularly pinching back the vines, or let it climb up a moss pole.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a lightweight, well-aerated, and sharply draining potting mix. A quality indoor potting soil combined with a generous amount of perlite and orchid bark works perfectly to keep the roots healthy and oxygenated.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every two weeks during the active spring and summer growing season with a balanced liquid indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Hold off on feeding entirely during autumn and winter.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Like many plants in the Araceae family, Syngoniums contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or biting the leaves causes intense mouth irritation, drooling, swelling, and digestive distress in both dogs and cats.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An exceptional choice for improving indoor air quality. It is highly efficient at filtering out household toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene from the air, while also increasing humidity levels inside closed, air-conditioned rooms.
