Description

💧 Watering
Extremely drought-resistant. Once established, it can survive for months without a single drop of water.
In Pots: Water sparingly only during the hottest summer months.
Winter: In Malta, the natural rainfall is usually more than enough. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage, as the only way to kill this plant is by letting it sit in “winter slush.”

☀️ Light
It is a sun-worshipper. It thrives in the most intense, direct Maltese sun. While it can survive in partial shade, the stems will become “leggy” and the characteristic blue-grey color will fade to a dull green. Under high sun and heat, the tips can take on a beautiful golden or reddish hue.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
The leaves are thick, pointed, and fleshy, resembling miniature pine needles or “spikes” (though they are soft to the touch). It has a creeping, spreading habit and produces tall, flat-topped clusters of pale yellow to greenish-white flowers in early summer (June–July).

🪴 Potting Mix
Needs very little organic matter. A gritty, sandy mix is best. You can even use a mix of local soil and crushed limestone. It thrives in poor, rocky soil where other plants would wither.

🌿 Fertilizer
Does not require any fertilizer. In fact, too much nitrogen will make the plant grow too fast and lose its compact, rugged shape.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic to pets. Since it is a native wild plant, it’s a very safe and natural addition to any Maltese terrace.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.

🌬️ Air Purifying
As a groundcover, its main environmental “superpower” is heat reduction. In Malta, planting this on a rooftop or in a large planter can help insulate the surface and provide a habitat for local lizards (Gremxula) and pollinators.

💡 The “Local Hero” Advantage:
Because Sedum sediforme is a local species, it is perfectly adapted to the salty winds and high alkalinity of Malta. It is the ideal “lazy gardener” plant—it looks better the more you ignore it. It’s also a fantastic choice for a Green Roof project in Malta because of its shallow root system and extreme resilience.
