Description

💧 Watering
Follow a strict “soak and dry” method. Water thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out. It easily stores water in its chubby leaves, making it highly drought-tolerant. Cut back watering to a bare minimum during the winter months to protect it from root rot.

☀️ Light
It thrives in full sun to partial shade. To get those beautiful, signature red tips, it needs plenty of direct morning or afternoon sunlight. If kept in too much shade, the leaves will stay solid green and the stems will stretch out.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features low-growing, sprawling stems packed with tightly clustered, jelly bean-like leaves. In mid-spring, it often produces small, star-shaped yellow flowers. Handle with care: The plump leaves pop off very easily if brushed against, but don’t worry—any fallen leaf left on top of the soil will quickly grow roots and start a brand-new plant!

🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is essential. Use a specialized cactus and succulent gritty soil mix, or add plenty of perlite or coarse sand to standard potting soil. It adapts beautifully to Malta’s neutral-to-alkaline limestone environments.

🌿 Fertilizer
Requires minimal feeding. A single application of a diluted, low-nitrogen liquid succulent fertilizer in early spring is more than enough to keep it happy for the entire growing season.

⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Like many sedums, it contains mild toxins that can cause stomach upset, drooling, or vomiting if chewed on by curious dogs and cats. Keep it on a high shelf or hanging basket out of their reach.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While it doesn’t process large volumes of indoor air toxins due to its size, it makes a wonderfully resilient, low-maintenance outdoor groundcover or balcony accent that handles strong Maltese winds and heat beautifully.
