Description
💧 Watering
Like most sedums, it is highly drought-tolerant. In the ground, it can survive on Malta’s winter rainfall alone.
In pots: Water only when the soil is bone-dry.
The Winter Rule: Be careful with watering during our humid, rainy winter months; if the soil stays “soggy” for too long, the lower stems may rot.
☀️ Light
It loves full sun to partial shade.
The Color Change: One of the coolest things about Sedum palmeri is its reaction to temperature and light. In the cold Maltese winter or under intense sun, the edges of the green leaves will turn a beautiful blush-pink or orange.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows in a “trailing rosette” fashion. The stems start upright but eventually lean over and cascade, making it look fantastic in hanging baskets or spilling over the edge of a stone planter. It’s a relatively fast grower and will quickly form a dense, fleshy mat.
🪴 Potting Mix
It isn’t picky, but it must drain well. A mix of standard soil and grit or perlite is perfect. In Malta, it is often seen growing successfully in very little soil, tucked into the crevices of limestone walls or rockeries.
🌿 Fertilizer
Hardly necessary. If you want to encourage a massive bloom, you can give it a weak dose of liquid fertilizer in late autumn (November), just as it starts preparing its winter flower spikes.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a much safer alternative to the Crassula (Jade) if you have pets that like to explore your plants.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Mostly used as an outdoor groundcover or “spiller.” It is incredibly hardy against sea salt and wind, making it an ideal choice for seaside balconies.
