Description

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Because its roots are quite fine, it doesn’t handle drought well, but “wet feet” will cause the crown to rot. In the humid Maltese winter, check the soil frequently; the lack of airflow in closed rooms can lead to fungal issues if the soil stays too wet.

☀️ Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. The “Tricolor” variety needs more light than the plain green version to maintain those beautiful pink and white margins. Avoid the direct Maltese sun, especially through glass, as it will scorch the delicate leaves in minutes. A north or east-facing window is usually perfect.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

Features rounded, fuzzy leaves with stunning variegation. Its most famous trait is the long, thin red runners (stolons) it sends out, which grow baby “pups” at the ends. It looks spectacular in a hanging basket where these runners can dangle freely.

🪴 Potting Mix

Use a light, airy, and well-draining potting mix. A standard indoor potting soil mixed with a little extra perlite or orchid bark is ideal. Ensure the pot has a drainage hole to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid getting fertilizer on the fuzzy leaves, as it can cause spotting or chemical burns.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Good news! The Saxifraga is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It’s a safe choice for a home where curious pets might try to “play” with the dangling runners.

🌬️ Air Purifying

While not the heaviest lifter in terms of air filtration, its constant production of “babies” increases the overall leaf surface area in your home, helping to boost local oxygen levels and humidity.

💡 Pro-Tip for Malta:
In the heat of a Maltese summer, this plant appreciates a bit of extra humidity. Since we often use air conditioning which dries the air, place your Saxifraga on a tray of pebbles with a little water (making sure the pot doesn’t sit in the water) to keep the leaf edges from turning brown and crispy.
