Description

Ruscus is a tough evergreen shrub valued for its unusual glossy green foliage and attractive red berries. Naturally adapted to Mediterranean conditions, it is an excellent low-maintenance choice for Malta, particularly for shaded garden areas where many other plants struggle.

💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Ruscus is quite drought-tolerant and requires relatively little additional water. During Malta’s prolonged summer heat, occasional deep watering will help maintain healthy growth, particularly for container-grown plants.

☀️ Light
Ruscus grows well in partial shade to full shade and is particularly useful for darker areas of the garden. In Malta, it benefits from protection from intense midday and afternoon summer sun. Gentle morning sun is generally well tolerated.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow-growing evergreen shrub forms a dense clump of upright stems covered with glossy, leaf-like structures called cladodes. Small flowers may be followed by bright red berries on female plants when pollination occurs. Its naturally compact growth requires little pruning beyond removing old or damaged stems.

🪴 Potting Mix
Ruscus adapts to a wide range of soils but performs best in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. For container growing, use a quality potting mix and ensure the pot has adequate drainage.

🌿 Fertilizer
Ruscus has relatively low feeding requirements. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of compost in spring to support fresh growth. Container-grown plants can receive an additional light feeding during the growing season if necessary.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ruscus is best kept away from cats and dogs. Its berries and other plant material may cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested, so pets should be discouraged from chewing or eating the plant.
