Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary)
Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as Rosemary and now botanically classified as Salvia rosmarinus, is an aromatic evergreen Mediterranean herb prized for its fragrant leaves and delicate blue flowers. Exceptionally well suited to Malta’s hot, dry climate, it is an excellent choice for herb gardens, sunny balconies, containers, and Mediterranean-style planting.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is becoming established, then allow the soil to dry between waterings. Mature Rosemary is highly drought-tolerant and generally copes very well with Malta’s dry summers. Avoid frequent watering or constantly damp soil, particularly during winter.
☀️ Light
Rosemary thrives in full sun and performs best with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It tolerates Malta’s strong summer sunshine and heat exceptionally well, provided the soil drains freely.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This evergreen shrub produces narrow, highly aromatic leaves that can be harvested throughout the year for culinary use. Small blue to violet flowers appear mainly during the cooler months and spring in Malta, providing a valuable food source for bees and other pollinators. Regular light pruning and harvesting encourage dense, bushy growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in light, very well-draining soil. A Mediterranean herb mix or general potting mix amended with grit, perlite, or coarse sand works well in containers. Rosemary dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil and requires excellent drainage around its roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Rosemary has low nutrient requirements and does not need frequent feeding. Apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer or organic compost in spring. Container-grown plants can be fed occasionally during the growing season, but excessive fertilizer can encourage soft growth and reduce the intensity of the herb’s aroma.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
Rosemary is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Small amounts are unlikely to cause problems, although pets should still be discouraged from consuming large quantities of the plant.

Rosemary is primarily valued for its aromatic foliage, culinary uses, and benefits to pollinators rather than for proven indoor air-purifying properties. Its strongly scented evergreen foliage makes it an attractive and useful addition to sunny outdoor spaces.
