Description

Raspberry ‘Jewel’ (Rubus occidentalis ‘Jewel’) is a vigorous black raspberry variety prized for its dark purple-black berries with a rich, sweet flavour. It is a productive fruiting cane, but in Malta it benefits from consistent watering, good airflow, and protection from the most intense summer heat.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, flowering, and fruit development, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Raspberries have relatively shallow roots and do not cope well with prolonged drought.

During Malta’s hot, dry spring and summer months, water deeply and regularly. Applying a generous layer of organic mulch around the root zone is particularly beneficial, helping retain moisture and keep the roots cooler.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun to partial shade. Good sunlight is important for flowering, fruit production, and sweet berries, but Malta’s intense summer heat can be stressful for black raspberries.

A position receiving morning sun with some protection from the strongest afternoon summer sun is preferable, particularly in exposed locations or for plants grown in containers.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

‘Jewel’ is a deciduous fruiting plant that develops long, arching canes. Pale flowers are followed by berries that change from green to red and finally deep purple-black when ripe.

Fruit is mainly produced on second-year canes. After harvesting, remove the canes that have fruited at ground level, leaving healthy new canes to produce the following year’s crop.

The long canes benefit from a trellis or wire support. Unlike many modern blackberry varieties, black raspberry canes are thorny, so gloves are recommended when pruning and training the plant.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in fertile, organic-rich, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture. Incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter will improve soil structure and moisture retention.

For container growing, choose a large pot with excellent drainage and use a high-quality potting mix suitable for fruiting plants. Mulching the surface is especially useful in Malta to reduce root-zone temperatures and moisture loss.

🌿 Fertilizer

Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost in late winter or early spring as new growth begins. An additional fertilizer suitable for fruiting plants can be applied as flowering and fruit development begin.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous cane and foliage growth at the expense of flowers and berries.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Raspberries are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, and the ripe fruit is not considered poisonous. Large quantities of berries may still cause digestive upset. ‘Jewel’ also has thorny canes, which can cause physical injury to curious pets.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Raspberry ‘Jewel’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting plant rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees and other beneficial insects, making it a useful addition to an edible and pollinator-friendly garden.
