Description

Quercus ilex is a hardy Mediterranean evergreen tree admired for its dense, dark-green foliage and rounded canopy. Naturally suited to Malta’s climate, it is an excellent choice for large gardens, landscaping and providing year-round shade.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while establishing. Once mature, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal additional watering.

☀️ Light

Thrives in full sun and tolerates Malta’s intense summer heat. Young trees also tolerate partial shade.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

A slow to moderately growing evergreen tree with leathery green leaves and a broad, spreading canopy. Produces small acorns as it matures.

🪴 Potting Mix

Prefers well-draining soil and tolerates Malta’s limestone-rich, alkaline conditions. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

🌿 Fertilizer

Generally requires little feeding. Apply a light dose of balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if needed.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Acorns and leaves are toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. They contain tannins that can cause digestive upset and potentially more serious problems, particularly if large quantities are consumed.

🌬️ Air Purifying

As a large evergreen tree, Holm Oak helps capture airborne particles and absorb carbon dioxide. It also provides valuable shade and habitat for wildlife.
