Plant Details

Botanical Name: Polaskia chichipe
Common Name: Chichipe Cactus
Plant Type: Cactus
Pot Size: 6.5 cm
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, columnar, branching with age
Mature Size: Approximately 3–5 metres tall in ideal outdoor conditions; remains considerably smaller when container grown

Care Guide

☀️ Light:

Thrives in full sun or very bright light. In Malta, gradually acclimatise young plants to direct sunlight and provide some protection from intense summer afternoon sun until established.

💧 Watering:

Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Avoid prolonged wet conditions.

🌱 Soil:

Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or coarse sand to ensure excellent drainage.

🌡 Temperature:

Best grown between 15–35°C. Tolerates warm, dry conditions well but should be protected from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C, particularly when grown in containers.

🌸 Flowering

Mature plants may produce small, attractive greenish-white to cream-coloured flowers during spring and summer. The flowers typically emerge along the upper sections of the stems and may be followed by rounded, reddish-purple fruits.

Flowering is uncommon in young container-grown specimens, which are primarily admired for their distinctive architectural growth.

Good to Know

Polaskia chichipe is native to the dry regions of central and southern Mexico, particularly the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, an area famous for its remarkable diversity of cactus species.

In its natural habitat, this cactus develops into a branching, tree-like plant that provides food and shelter for local wildlife. Its small, edible fruits are traditionally harvested and enjoyed in parts of Mexico.

The name Chichipe comes from the local name used for this cactus in its native region.

Although young plants are compact and suitable for small pots, mature specimens can develop into impressive architectural plants over many years when given sufficient space and suitable growing conditions.
