Description
Plumeria rubra, commonly known as Frangipani, is a tropical tree admired for its beautifully scented flowers and sculptural branches. It is perfectly suited to Malta’s warm, sunny climate and rewards gardeners with spectacular blooms from late spring through autumn.
💧 Watering
Water deeply when the soil has dried out, allowing excess water to drain away completely. During Malta’s hot summer months, water more frequently, especially for potted plants. Reduce watering significantly in winter, particularly if the plant becomes dormant.
☀️ Light
Frangipani thrives in full sun and requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day to produce abundant flowers. A warm, sheltered position will encourage healthy growth and prolonged blooming.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This deciduous tree develops thick, fleshy branches and large green leaves, producing highly fragrant flowers in shades of white, pink, yellow, red, or a combination of colours. Leaves may naturally drop during the cooler months before new growth appears in spring.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix enriched with coarse sand or perlite. Excellent drainage is essential, as Frangipani is highly susceptible to root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants, preferably one higher in phosphorus to encourage more blooms. Stop feeding during winter dormancy.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Plumeria contains a milky sap that is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs and may also cause skin irritation. Wear gloves when pruning and keep the plant out of reach of curious pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Frangipani is grown primarily for its ornamental beauty and fragrance rather than its air-purifying properties. Its lush foliage and flowers create a relaxing, tropical atmosphere in gardens and outdoor spaces.
