Description

Plumeria rubra, commonly known as Frangipani, is a beautiful tropical shrub or small tree admired for its wonderfully fragrant, colourful flowers and distinctive sculptural branches. It is particularly well suited to Malta’s hot, sunny climate and makes an impressive feature plant for gardens, patios, and large containers.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly during spring and summer, allowing the upper soil to dry between waterings. During Malta’s hottest months, container-grown plants may require more frequent watering. Reduce watering considerably during autumn and winter when the plant enters dormancy, as excessive moisture at this time can cause root and stem rot.

☀️ Light
Plumeria thrives in full sun and performs best with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. A warm, sunny position encourages strong, compact growth and abundant flowering.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This deciduous tropical plant develops thick, fleshy branches topped with clusters of large green leaves and beautifully scented flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, red, or combinations of these colours. Leaf yellowing and loss during the cooler months is normal, with fresh growth returning as temperatures rise in spring.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix enriched with perlite, pumice, or coarse material. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during winter when the plant requires much less water.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants. A fertilizer with good potassium levels can help support abundant flowering. Reduce and eventually stop feeding as growth slows towards winter.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Plumeria is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap can also irritate the skin and eyes, so keep the plant away from pets and wear gloves when pruning or taking cuttings.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Plumeria is primarily valued for its spectacular flowers, fragrance, and ornamental appearance rather than for specific air-purifying properties. When grown outdoors, its leafy canopy adds greenery and provides attractive natural shade to sunny Mediterranean spaces.
