Description

💧 Watering
Water regularly during the growing season, especially during the peak of summer. While it is quite drought-tolerant once established in the ground, container-grown Plumbago will need frequent watering to keep the flowers from wilting. Always ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent soggy roots.

☀️ Light
It absolutely thrives in full sun. While it can grow in partial shade, the flower production will be significantly reduced and the plant will become leggy. In Malta, the more sun it gets, the more of those iconic blue (or white) clusters it will produce.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This is a fast-growing, scrambling shrub that can be treated as a climber if provided with support or as a mounding shrub. It features thin, light green leaves. One unique trait: the flowers and seed pods have tiny “sticky” hairs that can cling to clothing or pet fur!

🪴 Potting Mix
It isn’t fussy about soil and adapts well to the alkaline conditions of the Maltese Islands. For pots, use a standard, well-draining potting mix. Because it is a vigorous grower, it appreciates a bit of extra space for its roots to expand.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the spring and summer. If the leaves start to look a bit pale or yellow, it may need a boost of iron or a more nitrogen-rich feed to maintain that fresh green look.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Plumbago is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, because the flowers are “sticky,” they can easily get matted into long-haired pet fur, which might be a bit of a grooming nuisance!

🌬️ Air Purifying
Its massive volume of foliage and nearly year-round blooming cycle makes it a great oxygen producer. It’s also a magnet for butterflies and pollinators, helping to create a vibrant, healthy ecosystem on your balcony or in your garden.
