Description
💧 Watering
Water when the top 3-4cm of soil is dry, as this princess dislikes “wet feet.” In Malta’s high humidity, ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot, and reduce watering frequency during the cooler winter months.
☀️ Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light; placing it near a north or east-facing window is perfect. Avoid the direct Maltese sun, which will scorch the dark leaves, but provide enough light to maintain the deep, dark burgundy pigmentation.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This is a climbing variety that loves a moss pole or trellis for support to produce larger leaves. Its foliage is thick and waxy, appearing almost black in low light and shimmering with burgundy undertones in brighter spots.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a “chunky” aroid mix for maximum aeration—blend coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, and a bit of charcoal. This mimics its natural rainforest environment and prevents the soil from becoming too compacted.
🌿 Fertilizer
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength once a month during the growing season (March to October). Since it is a slower grower than common heartleaf varieties, avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause salt buildup in the soil.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Like most Philodendrons, it is toxic to pets if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep this plant on a high shelf or in a hanging basket away from curious cats and dogs.
🌬️ Air Purifying
It is a fantastic air purifier, particularly effective at removing toxins like formaldehyde from indoor spaces. Its large, waxy leaves are also great for trapping dust and freshening the air in your living room or office.
