Description
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light. To keep the red undersides vibrant, it needs good light. However, direct Maltese sun will “bleach” the dark green leaves and cause them to lose their luster.
💧 Watering
Low to Moderate. Treat it like a succulent. Wait until the soil is at least 75% dry before watering.
Warning: The stems are very prone to rot. Always water from the side or bottom; never pour water into the center of the plant.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows in a tight, pointed rosette. The leaves are more elongated and “lance-shaped” than other Caperata varieties. It’s a small plant, rarely growing larger than 20cm, making it perfect for desks or shelves.
🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is a must. Use a mix of potting soil, perlite, and maybe a bit of orchid bark. It needs a lot of air around the roots to prevent “damping off.”
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed once a month in spring and summer with a very diluted liquid fertilizer (1/4 strenght).
Over-fertilizing can lead to leggy growth.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! It is completely non-toxic to pets, so you can display its beautiful red leaves anywhere in the house.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
💡 Simple Tip: “The Fold”
If you see the leaves starting to “fold” or droop slightly, it’s usually a sign it’s thirsty. If the leaves feel mushy or fall off at the slightest touch, you are likely overwatering. In Malta’s humid winters, you may only need to water this plant once every 3 weeks!
