Key Features for Malta:
Breathtaking Blooms: Produces extra-large, fully double flowers in soft, romantic shades of pink.
Fragrant Heritage: Fills the garden with a sweet, nostalgic scent that is perfect for summer evenings.
Excellent Cut Flower: One of the most popular flowers for luxury floral arrangements and bridal bouquets.
Perennial Investment: Unlike annuals, these roots return year after year, growing into a lush, leafy shrub.
Expert Tips for Growing Peonies in Malta: Peonies can be a little “diva-like” in hot climates, so follow these steps for success:
Morning Sun Only: In Malta’s intense heat, peonies perform best in a spot with bright morning sun and afternoon shade. This prevents the delicate petals from scorching.
Don’t Plant Too Deep: This is the most common mistake! Plant the “eyes” (the pink buds on the roots) only 2-3 cm below the soil surface. If planted too deep, they will grow leaves but no flowers.
Well-Draining Soil: They hate soggy roots. Use a high-quality compost mixed with some grit to ensure drainage is perfect.
Chilling Period: Peonies like a cold winter. If we have a very mild winter in Malta, some gardeners place a few ice cubes on the soil surface above the roots in January to “trick” the plant into dormancy.
Patience Pays Off: Peonies can take a year or two to settle in before they bloom heavily, but they are well worth the wait!
Color: Soft to Mid-Pink.
Bloom Time: Late Spring to Early Summer (May – July).
