Pachycereus pringlei is a magnificent columnar cactus, admired for its thick, upright stems, attractive blue-green colouring and impressive architectural appearance. Native to northwestern Mexico, this slow-growing cactus is famous for being one of the largest cactus species in the world. Its exceptional drought tolerance and striking appearance make it a favourite among cactus enthusiasts.
Plant Details
Botanical Name: Pachycereus pringlei
Common Name: Mexican Giant Cardon • Cardon Cactus
Plant Type: Cactus
Pot Size: 6.5 cm
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, columnar, branching with age
Mature Size: Can exceed 15 metres tall in its natural habitat; remains considerably smaller when container grown
Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Thrives in full sun or very bright light. In Malta, gradually acclimatise young plants to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest summer months, to prevent scorching.
💧 Watering:
Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant.
🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or coarse sand to ensure excellent drainage.
🌡 Temperature:
Best grown between 15–35°C. Tolerates high summer temperatures well but should be protected from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C, especially when young or grown in containers.
🌸 Flowering
Mature specimens may produce attractive creamy-white flowers along the upper sections of their stems, typically during spring and early summer. The flowers may be followed by rounded fruits containing small seeds.
Flowering is uncommon in young container-grown plants, as this species generally requires considerable maturity before producing flowers.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Use Caution Around Pets

Good to Know
The Mexican Giant Cardon is considered the tallest cactus species in the world, with exceptional specimens reaching heights of over 15 metres in their native habitat.
It is often compared to the famous Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) because of its similar appearance. However, Pachycereus pringlei generally develops thicker stems and can grow even taller.
In the wild, mature plants form enormous branching structures that provide shelter and food for birds, insects and other desert wildlife.
Although young plants are compact and suitable for small containers, this species has the potential to become an impressive architectural specimen over many years when given sufficient space and suitable growing conditions.
