Description
The Sturon is widely regarded as one of the best “all-rounder” onions for home growers. These 100% organically grown onion sets produce beautiful, round, yellow-skinned onions with a crisp white flesh and a classic, bold flavor. Because they are incredibly slow to “bolt” (go to seed), they are very reliable even if the Maltese weather fluctuates.
Key Features for Malta:
Excellent Storage: Sturon is famous for its long shelf life. Once harvested and dried, these onions can be stored in a cool, dark place and enjoyed right through to the following spring.
Organic Quality: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, making them the healthy choice for your kitchen garden.
Heavy Yields: Produces large, uniform bulbs that are perfect for everything from Maltese stews (brodu) to fresh salads.
Heat Tolerant: Its resistance to bolting makes it well-suited for the warm sun in the Mediterranean.
Expert Tips for Growing Onions in Malta:
Planting Time: In Malta, you can start planting these sets as early as February.
Soil & Depth: Plant the sets so that just the very tip of the bulb is visible above the soil surface. Space them about 10-15cm apart in rows.
Watering: Keep the soil moist but never waterlogged. Onions have shallow roots, so they need regular watering during dry spells, but stop watering once the bulbs have reached full size to allow the skins to ripen.
Harvesting: When the green leaves start to turn yellow and “flop over,” it’s time to harvest! Lift them gently and let them dry in the Maltese sun for a few days until the outer skins are papery.
Companion Planting: Plant onions near your carrots to help deter carrot fly, or near your strawberries to help keep pests away naturally.
