Description
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly when the top 3 centimeters of soil feel dry. These plants prefer consistent moisture during the spring and summer growing seasons. They are moderately drought-tolerant once established but will drop their leaves if left dry for too long.
☀️ Light
They require full sun to partial shade to grow properly. Providing at least 6 hours of direct daily sunlight ensures strong stems and a high volume of flowers. They handle the intense warmth of a Maltese summer quite well.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Growth habits vary from low-growing annual herbs to sprawling woody perennial vines. The leaves are typically dark green, lance-shaped, and sometimes covered in fine hairs. They grow rapidly and can be trimmed regularly to maintain a tidy shape.
🪴 Potting Mix
They thrive in standard, rich, and well-draining potting soil. They are highly adaptable to various soil types, including Malta’s naturally alkaline earth. Good container drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Regular feeding helps support continuous flower and berry production throughout the warmer months.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Highly toxic to pets. All wild nightshade varieties contain solanine, a toxic alkaloid. Ingesting any part of the plant, especially the unripe green berries, causes severe stomach upset and neurological issues in dogs and cats.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While mainly grown outdoors, their thick foliage helps block dust on open terraces. The small flowers are highly attractive to local pollinators, bringing plenty of beneficial bees into the garden.
