Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is young to help it establish a deep, resilient root system. Once mature, it is highly drought-tolerant and handles dry Mediterranean summers effortlessly. Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out before watering again. Ensure it never sits in stagnant, waterlogged soil, which can cause root rot.
☀️ Light
It performs best in full sun to partial shade. To get a dense, tight habit and a heavy flush of fragrant white flowers in mid-to-late summer, give it a bright, sun-drenched position. It handles intense heat and open exposure beautifully.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features tiny, pointed, oval leaves that are thick, glossy, and tightly packed along the stems. When crushed, the foliage releases a wonderful, spicy herbal fragrance. It has a naturally neat, compact, and slow-to-moderate growth habit. Because it responds beautifully to clipping, it is a legendary choice for topiary balls, formal low hedges, or neat patio specimens.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very well-draining potting medium. It thrives in loamy, sandy, or stony soils and is completely at home in poor-quality earth. It is perfectly adapted to Malta’s highly alkaline limestone soils. If growing in containers, use a standard potting mix lightened up with a generous amount of sand or perlite.
🌿 Fertilizer
Requires very little feeding. A single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a light top-dressing of organic compost in early spring is more than enough to maintain healthy foliage and steady growth.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Mildly toxic to pets. While historical herbal uses exist, Myrtle leaves contain essential oils (like cineole and myrtenol) that can cause mild digestive upset, vomiting, or drooling if chewed on in large quantities by dogs and cats.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An absolute champion at resisting coastal winds and urban pollution. The tough, leathery leaves are heavily protected against salt spray and dry, dusty gusts, making it an excellent structural plant for exposed balconies, courtyards, and frontline coastal gardens.
