Description

💧 Watering
This plant has a high water requirement, especially during the peak of the Maltese summer, and should be watered deeply as soon as the soil surface feels dry. While it loves moisture, ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent the base from becoming mushy during cooler months.

☀️ Light
It thrives in full sun, which actually intensifies the deep red and burgundy hues of the foliage. However, like most large-leafed plants in Malta, it should be placed in a position sheltered from strong winds to prevent the beautiful leaves from tearing.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Unlike the standard banana, this variety grows from a single “trunk” and does not produce offshoots, forming a massive, architectural rosette of paddle-shaped leaves. It is exceptionally fast-growing, quickly reaching impressive sizes in a single growing season.
This variety does not produce edible fruit.

🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very rich, fertile, and well-aerated potting medium with plenty of organic compost. Because it grows so rapidly and becomes top-heavy, use a large, heavy ceramic or stone pot to provide stability against the wind.

🌿 Fertilizer
This is a “heavy feeder” that requires a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks throughout the spring and summer. High-potash feeds are particularly beneficial for maintaining the strength of its thick, succulent midribs.

The Musa ensete Maurellii is generally considered non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with curious dogs or cats.
