Description
Morus nigra is a deciduous fruit tree admired for its delicious, dark purple-black mulberries and broad, attractive foliage. Well suited to Malta’s Mediterranean climate, it provides generous shade and sweet, juicy fruit.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Mature trees tolerate dry conditions but benefit from deep watering during Malta’s hot summers, especially when fruiting.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6 hours daily. Choose a spacious location with good airflow.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces large, heart-shaped green leaves and sweet, dark mulberries in summer. Loses its leaves in winter and develops a broad, spreading canopy.
🪴 Potting Mix
Prefers fertile, well-draining soil but tolerates various soil types, including Malta’s limestone-rich soils.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring if needed. Established trees generally require minimal feeding.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ripe mulberries are generally non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, unripe fruit and the plant’s milky sap may cause digestive irritation. Avoid allowing pets to eat large quantities of fallen fruit.
🌬️ Air Purifying
As an outdoor tree, Black Mulberry helps capture airborne particles, provides shade and supports garden biodiversity.
