Commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant. An iconic indoor and patio plant, loved for its large, glossy, split leaves. Native to tropical rainforests, it adapts beautifully to Malta’s warm indoor climate and shaded outdoor areas, bringing a lush, jungle-like feel to any space.

Description

💧 Watering
Water once a week during spring–summer.
Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry before watering again.
Reduce watering to every 10–14 days in cooler months.
Avoid waterlogging. Roots are sensitive to excess moisture.

☀️ Sunlight
Prefers bright, indirect light.
In Malta, ideal for shaded terraces, patios, or bright indoor rooms.
Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves.

🍃 Foliage / 🌸 Flowering
Large, deep green, glossy leaves with characteristic natural splits and holes.
Mature plants may produce cream-colored flowers and edible fruit (in warm climates), though this is rare indoors.
Grown mainly for its striking foliage and bold tropical form.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a well-draining, airy mix; peat, perlite, bark, and compost blend.
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring–summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
Pause feeding in autumn–winter.

🚫🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested (contains calcium oxalate crystals).
Keep out of reach of pets.

Excellent air purifier. Removes indoor toxins and improves humidity.

🌿 Additional Notes
Wipe leaves regularly to maintain shine and prevent dust buildup.
Provide a moss pole or support for climbing and larger leaf development.
