Description
☀️ Light
Partial Shade. In Northern Europe, these love full sun, but in Malta, the afternoon sun is too intense. Position it where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent the leaves from crisping.
💧 Watering
Regular and consistent. Honeyberries have shallow roots and do not like to dry out. During a Maltese summer, you will need to water it frequently. Mulching the top of the soil with bark or straw is a great way to keep the roots cool.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It is a deciduous shrub (it will drop its leaves in winter). The ‘Duet’ variety is known for its upright, bushy habit and produces cylindrical, blue berries that taste like a mix of blueberry, raspberry, and elderberry.
🪴 Potting Mix
Unlike Blueberries, Honeyberries do not need acidic soil. They are very happy in standard, well-draining potting soil. They actually prefer the slightly alkaline conditions often found in Malta.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy nitrogen late in the year, as you want the plant to “toughen up” for the summer heat.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe. Unlike many other Lonicera (Honeysuckle) species which have toxic berries, the fruit of the kamtschatica is edible and the plant is generally considered non-toxic.
