🪴 Planting Instructions

  • When to plant: Autumn or spring
  • Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep, following the supplier’s instructions
  • Spacing: Approximately 20–25cm apart
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
  • Planting method: Plant with the pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water thoroughly. Plant promptly after purchase, as lily bulbs should not be allowed to dry out.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering, without leaving it waterlogged. Check pots regularly during warm weather. Reduce watering once the stems and leaves begin to yellow, but avoid letting the bulbs become completely dried out.

☀️ Light & Position

Choose a bright position with shelter from strong winds. In Malta, morning sunshine with light afternoon shade is a practical choice. Keep the root area cool with a light mulch, leaving space around the stems.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue feeding after flowering while the foliage remains green to help replenish the bulbs.

🍃 After Flowering

Remove faded flowers, leaving the leafy stems intact. Cut stems back only once they have completely yellowed and dried.

Bulbs can remain planted in well-drained soil. Divide crowded clumps during dormancy when needed.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Protect pots from strong afternoon heat and check moisture regularly as temperatures rise. Good drainage is essential during winter rain. Avoid drying and storing lily bulbs in the same way as tulips or hyacinths.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Extremely toxic to cats. All parts—including flowers, leaves, bulbs and pollen—can cause fatal kidney failure. Water from a vase containing lilies is also dangerous. Avoid growing or displaying lilies where cats have access.

Contact a veterinarian immediately if a cat may have been exposed. Dogs do not share the same kidney-failure risk, but eating plant material may cause stomach upset.
